Sandwich Edges Falmouth with Bodjiak Blast

By Mike Delaney

SANDWICH - Trailing Falmouth 5-3 with two outs and nobody on base in the bottom of the seventh inning, the situation looked bleak for the hometeam Sandwich Blue Knights as the late afternoon shadows lengthened across Fenton Field.
Then transpired a combination of pressure, error, luck ,skill and improbable outcome symbolizing what a beautiful thing high school athletics can be to watch.
An error, a walk and two passed balls put the tieing run at third and sophomore Joe Perry at the plate. Perry worked the pitcher to a full count and hit a sharp grounder to second.
The Falmouth fielder seemed to rush his throw to first, drawing the first baseman off the bag just enough for Perry to be safe and the game tied.
Falmouth retired the next batter and it was on to extra innings. Matt Melia, pitching his second strong relief inning, put the Clippers down in order in the eighth.
Then suddenly it was over. With one dramatic crack of the bat, Brian Bodjiak sent the ball over the fence in right-center, sent Blue Knight spirits soaring and sent the Falmouth Clippers home heartbroken.
" We have a lot of seniors on this team," said Coach David Aycock with a huge smile. " This may be a special year for us."
It was certainly a very special afternoon for anyone wearing blue.
